In September 1987, a vision to transform lives through literacy took shape in Simpson County. The following month, the Simpson County Literacy Council, Inc. became a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, establishing a mission that has remained constant: to help adults build the reading, writing, and life skills needed to thrive.
From the very beginning, we’ve believed that education should be free and accessible to everyone. With the support of our community, we’ve provided one-on-one instruction, small group classes, and customized learning programs for adults at every stage of their journey.
In 2006, we took a major step forward by purchasing our own building in Franklin, KY—a space that became a hub for adult learning. Over the years, we grew beyond traditional literacy services, expanding our programs to help adults earn their high school equivalency, learn English, improve job readiness, and navigate digital technology.
As our impact grew, so did our vision. In 2017, we rebranded to better reflect the wide range of services we offer. Then, in 2024, we became the South Central Literacy Council, recognizing our commitment to serving an even broader community of adult learners.
Today, we provide Adult Basic Education (ABE), which includes:
✔ Functional Literacy – Reading, writing, and math for everyday life.
✔ High School Equivalency (HSE) – GED preparation and support.
✔ English as a Second Language (ESL) – Practical English for work and daily life.
✔ Digital Literacy – Technology skills for modern communication and employment.
✔ Workplace Literacy – Job-related skills, professional communication, and career readiness.
✔ Adult Living – Essential life skills like budgeting, navigating resources, and managing daily responsibilities.
We understand that learning isn’t one-size-fits-all—which is why we offer personalized instruction, flexible scheduling, and a welcoming space where adults can build skills at their own pace.
Our work is powered by a small but passionate team of two full-time staff members and a dedicated group of volunteers who provide tutoring, mentorship, and support. Every day, they help adults take steps toward new jobs, higher wages, stronger communication, and greater independence.
We know that barriers like transportation, work schedules, and family responsibilities can make in-person learning difficult. That’s why we’ve expanded into distance learning, offering more flexible, accessible options so adults can learn wherever they are, whenever they can.
Literacy isn’t just about books—it’s about opportunity, confidence, and self-sufficiency. Whether it’s helping a parent read to their child, supporting an adult in earning a better-paying job, or giving someone the skills to navigate the digital world, every lesson we teach changes lives.
We provide essential literacy learning opportunities through 1 on 1 and small group settings for adults to enrich their lives and ultimately the community we serve.
